In this Q&A style talk Moyna Flannigan discussed her recent work with art historian and critic Susannah Thompson, focussing on the collage and paintings which comprised her exhibition Girl With Tear. Flannigan considered some of the recurrent themes in her work – the representation of women in art, the recuperation of the figure in painting and her use of imagery drawn from art history and popular culture – as well as looking in detail at the decisions around some of the formal departures for her practice. The works in Girl With Tear highlight Flannigan’s experimentation with new materials and processes (distemper, collage) which led to the production of a new body of work which is both generative and self-referential.
